Top Things to Do in Sonamarg

Beyond being a base camp, Sonamarg is a destination of its own.

1. Thajiwas Glacier

A 3km trek or pony ride from the main town takes you to the base of this stunning glacier. You'll see local Gujjar huts and snow even in peak summer.

  • Experience: Sledding on snow & photography.
  • Duration: 2-3 hours.

2. Zero Point & Zoji La Pass

Hire a local Union taxi to take you up the Zoji La pass to Zero Point. This is where the landscape changes from green meadows to high-altitude cold desert.

  • Must Do: Enjoy a bowl of Maggi at the snow point.
  • Tip: Union taxis are mandatory for this route.

3. Neelgrath Helipad

Even if you aren't flying, the Neelgrath area offers beautiful views of the valley. It's the primary takeoff point for helicopters to Panjtarni (Amarnath).

4. Trout Fishing in Lidder

Sonamarg is famous for trout fishing in the icy waters. Permits are required from the local fisheries department.

Baltal Base Camp (Yatra)

If you are starting the Yatra at 3 AM, staying at the Baltal Tents or Neelgrath is best. Facilities are basic but provided by SASB and local vendors.
